In the first post in this series, I shared how the leaders of Nakano City, one of the 23 wards within the Tokyo metropolitan area, describe how they see kaizen (small continuous improvement) and kaikaku (large breakthrough improvements) as their method for developing their people to provide high levels of omotenashi (the Japanese concept of customer service). So how […] Kaikaku is often used in the context of another Japanese production philosophy, Kaizen. Both Kaizen and Kaikaku work to improve production processes but are two very different approaches. Where Kaizen is focused is focused on continuous incremental changes, Kaikaku works to make fundamental changes that will have a significant impact. Kaizen and Kaikaku. Scrum is a framework not only for producing product, but also for constantly advancing the abilities of the team creating that product. From a process perspective, Scrum is all about improvement, which, in Japanese, is just “ 改善.” Thus, Kaikaku as a phenomenon has to some extend been described in consistency, yet using different terminology.

While Kaikaku refers to a radical change over a short period, Kaizen involves continuous minor changes. Kaizen also means taking small steps over a long period. When there are team-related problems in a production system, Kaizen is a popular option. When you do Kaizen, you involve all the employees in the small steps. You aim for small improvements.

These interconnected ideas of improvement are essential to grasping the principles of Lean. 2020-06-04 Kaikaku is a less famous but equally important concept that describes revolutionary change or major reform/transformation.

Kaizen and kaikaku

Kaizen seems to be the most often used in Lean discussions, so let’s start there. Kaizen is often described as continuous improvement. The main identifiable differences between Kaizen and Kaikaku are the size of the action taken to achieve lean, and the length of time it takes for that action to have a noticeable effect. Summarizing, Kaizen has a continuous incremental impact, while kaizen has a more radical, immediate impact. However, this does not mean you need to only select one or the other. Kaikaku is a rapid change event as opposed to Kaizen which is smaller incremental improvements.

Accordingly, Kaikaku requires more planning, as shown in Exhibit 2, though the magnitude of the gains typically justify the additional resources. When executed well, Kaikaku cre-ates a momentum that transforms the entire Kaizen – the most commonly used phrase referring to a slow and steady incremental change. However, no amount of Kaizen of the candle will lead to the development of the light bulb. This brings up our next concept.

Kaikaku can be translated as "radical change"; or to be more specific, "changes with radical impacts in short periods of time".In a language comparable to kaizen, in AVG we call it "Discontinuous Improvement".After more than 900 projects of experience, we are certain that Value Engineering and Tear-Down Analysis are the Kaikaku encompasses more activities and addresses systemic waste, whereas Kaizen is more tactical and addresses process waste.
